How to deep clean a carpet

Pet hair sits on the pile and works into the backing. Dry removal first, then a wet clean if the fiber type allows it.

What you need

  • A vacuum with a brush roll you can turn off on a loop or shag pile if the maker says so.
  • A lint tool for surface hair. The Cleaner Xtra is 60 x 8.07 x 1.97 inches with an adjustable handle for large floors.
  • A carpet cleaner or steamer rated for your fiber, plus the solution the machine lists.

Steps

  1. Pick up toys, bowls, and cords. Lift furniture pads if they come up easily.
  2. Vacuum slowly in overlapping passes. Empty the bin when it fills.
  3. Lift remaining hair with a lint tool. Skip knitted runners and delicate weaves.
  4. Spot-check the wet cleaner in a closet or behind a door.
  5. Work in lanes. Do not soak the backing. Let the room dry with airflow before pets walk on it.

Stairs and landings need a smaller tool. The Cleaner Pro is 6.6 x 5 x 0.37 inches for those areas.
